Okera Mairi at Yasaka Shrine
On New Year's Eve, a sacred fire burns through the night in lanterns at Yasaka Shrine together with the medicinal okera root, and visitors light a fire rope from it to carry home as a charm against misfortune. It is one of Kyoto's best-known year-end customs, open to all visitors.
