Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion)

Built as the mountain retreat of shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, this Zen temple is known for its Kannon-den, the 'Silver Pavilion', set in a quiet garden at the foot of the Higashiyama hills. It opens from 8:30 for most of the year, so arriving early is the best way to avoid tour groups.
