Things to do in Santorini, Mykonos & the Cyclades

On Santorini, the Caldera Rim Villages of Fira and Oia line sheer cliffs above a flooded crater, with famous sunsets from the clifftop lanes, and Akrotiri Prehistoric City preserves a Bronze Age town buried by a volcanic eruption under a protective roof. Its wall paintings, including the Saffron Gatherers, hang in the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, a two-minute walk from Fira's central square. On Mykonos, Little Venice & Windmills set colourful balconies right over the waves beside the island's trademark windmills, the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos displays the relief-decorated Mykonos Pithos, and about an hour by boat the Delos Archaeological Site keeps the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Avenue of the Lions and mosaic-floored houses. Naxos Chora & Venetian Kastro greet you at the harbour, Apeiranthos Village & Collection pair marble-paved alleys with Early Cycladic figurines, and the Milos Volcanic Coast rises in sheer white volcanic rocks at Kleftiko and at Sarakiniko.

Good to knowDelos is open until 16:00 in November and closed from December to March, so bring water and sun protection when you go. Akrotiri, the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos and the Apeiranthos collection are closed on Tuesdays and generally open 8:30–15:30 in winter. Visit the Milos coast on a calm day and pack sun protection, as there is little shade.
