Sliding Sands Trail into Haleakalā Crater

From the Haleakalā Visitor Center lot, the Keonehēʻeheʻe (Sliding Sands) Trail drops into a cinder-colored volcanic landscape; a 0.5-mile round trip reaches the first overlook. The climb back at high altitude takes about twice as long, so turn around early and watch for altitude symptoms.
