Sassi di Matera

The UNESCO-listed Sassi are districts of cave dwellings and rock churches carved into tufa, with traces of settlement since the Palaeolithic, spread across two natural amphitheatres. Head to the panoramic terraces at dusk for the famous 'nativity scene' view; films such as The Passion of the Christ were shot here.
