Rangitoto Island Summit Track

Ferry about 25 minutes from downtown to Auckland's island volcano, then hike the Summit Track (7 km, about 2 hours return) through black lava fields and the world's largest pōhutukawa forest; a side track leads to lava caves, so bring a torch. There is no food, drinking water or much shade on the island, so carry supplies, wear sturdy shoes and check your gear for pests and seeds before you go.
