13 picks in Gothenburg & the West Coast, Sweden: spots, food and events for travelers.
🎲 Spin the gacha for Gothenburg & the West CoastIn the city centre, Liseberg, Gothenburg's much-loved amusement park, has 42 rides and attractions, gardens and the children's area Kaninlandet, and a short walk away World of Volvo traces the Volvo story from past to future with iconic vehicles, interactive exhibitions and a traffic school, while Universeum, Sweden's national science centre, spreads over ten floors from a tropical rainforest and shark aquariums to a reptile house, space stations and the 360-degree Wisdome. Haga, one of the city's oldest districts, has cobblestone streets, traditional governor's houses, cafés and artisan shops, with a famously huge cinnamon bun to find on Haga Nygata, and Feskekörka, the church-shaped 'fish church' market hall in use since 1874, has reopened with fish counters and seafood restaurants for a shrimp sandwich or seafood lunch beside the Vallgraven canal. The Röhsska Museum follows design history from the mid-1800s to today with a collection of over 500 chairs, 18th-century interiors and East Asian applied arts. Slottsskogen, the city's main park, mixes planned gardens with natural forest, playgrounds and cafés, and its zoo keeps moose, Gotland ponies and other Nordic animals; nearby, the Natural History Museum, the city's oldest museum, shows the mounted Malmska blue whale, an African elephant and a model of the early human Lucy, and the Botanical Garden, one of Europe's largest, has a rock garden, a Japanese glade, a rhododendron valley and an arboretum of 300 tree species. Boats from Saltholmen reach car-free islands of the southern archipelago such as Brännö, Styrsö and Vrångö, with fishing villages and granite shores, Carlsten Fortress, founded in 1658, crowns Marstrand island above its small wooden town, and further up the coast Smögen's boardwalk of about 1 km runs along a fishing harbour used since the 1500s, lined with shops, cafés and seafood restaurants, with boats out to Hållö and Kungshamn. In the Christmas season, Liseberg turns into a winter world of lights, Christmas trees and Christmas markets.
Good to knowLiseberg's opening days vary by season, so check its calendar before you go, and Universeum sometimes closes areas for maintenance, so look at its website first. The Röhsska Museum and the Natural History Museum are closed on Mondays and free for visitors under 20 (students also enter the Natural History Museum free), while World of Volvo is open daily with longer hours on Thursdays, making it an easy Monday choice. Haga and Slottsskogen are free to explore, and Slottsskogen's zoo is free and open all year, though its petting zoo and pony rides run only from April to September; the Botanical Garden is open at all times with a voluntary entry fee, but only the Bergshuset greenhouse is currently open. A regular public transport ticket covers the boat to the southern archipelago, about an hour from the centre, Carlsten Fortress is open all year, and Smögen gets very busy in summer, so arrive early. On rainy days, Universeum, World of Volvo, the Röhsska Museum and the Natural History Museum are good indoor picks, and Feskekörka makes a warm lunch stop. Christmas at Liseberg opens on selected days only, so check the calendar.
