Temple of Literature (Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam)

Built in 1070 to honour Confucius, it became home to Quoc Tu Giam, Vietnam's first national university, in 1076. Walk through five courtyards to the Doctors' stelae carved with the names of successful scholars and mounted on stone turtles; admission is 70,000 VND (free under 16), and an evening night tour runs on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
